Marylands only other win against Penn State was 53 years ago today

Dick “The Rifleman” Shiner was a surprise starter in yesterday’s big football game between Maryland and Penn State.

More surprised were the Penn State defenders as the blond sophomore from Lebanon, Pa., passed for three first-half touchdowns, which brought Maryland a 21-17 victory over the powerful and favored Nittany Lions.

Shiner suffered from a kicked leg that stiffened at halftime and didn’t play much after the intermission, but he didn’t suffer from stage fright before a full house of 39,000 in Byrd Stadium.

The six-foot, 190-pound Rifleman directed Maryland in for scores the first two times the Terrapins had the ball and then added another touchdown just before halftime as he completed 10 of his first 14 passes in his first starting assignment as a collegian.

He hit end Dick Barlund from seven yards out, halfback Tom Brown from 10 yards out and end Gary Collins from seven yards away on his payoff pitches.

The strong Penn State players, however, dominated play in the second half. The savage blocking and tackling took its toll on the Terrapins and Maryland had to put on a tremendous goal line stand in the final two minutes to clinch its fifth victory in seven games and remain in contention for a post-season bowl berth.

With less than three minutes to play and Maryland leading, 21-15, Penn State had a first down on the Maryland four-yard line. One minute later Penn State had to give the ball back on the 9-yard line as a line smash netted nothing. Quarterback Galen Hall found himself thrown for a 5-yard loss by sophomore fullback Harry Butsko and two wide passes failed to make connections — one was too high and the other too low by the hurried Hall.

The Terrapins gave up an intentional safety with 43 seconds to play for the opportunity to boot the ball out of danger with a free kick. End Gary Collins, who played his best game of the year, booted 52 yards and Maryland held Penn State at bay in its final desperate attempts to pull out a victory.

With Shiner playing only a few plays in the second half, halfbacks Ernie Arizzi and Jim Davidson out with sprained ankles and end Dick Barlund out with torn ligaments in his right iknee, Penn State dominated the second half.
