Patrick Beverley apologizes after chucking ball at fans, rebuffing journalist

After an eventful night, Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley apologized to ESPN producer Malinda Adams for refusing to be interviewed by her following the Bucks’ season-ending loss to Indiana on Thursday night. Late in that game, Beverley threw a basketball at fans behind the Bucks’ bench.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and support. I am humbled. Patrick Beverley just called me and apologized. I appreciate it and accept it. The Bucks also reached out to apologize. I've been in news for over 40 years and kindness and grace always win.

During the team’s postgame media availability, the 12-year veteran asked Adams whether she subscribes to his podcast, “The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone,” to which Adams said she does not. Beverley then told Adams that she wouldn’t be allowed to interview him, then later moved Adams’s microphone away from his face and asked her to leave the scrum around Beverley’s locker.

“Move that mic, please, or just get out of the circle, please, for me if you’re not subscribed to my pod. I appreciate it, thank you,” Beverley said to Adams.

Beverley’s exchange with Adams came just minutes after he threw a basketball into the Indiana crowd late in the fourth quarter, hitting a woman who was sitting behind the bench.

Beverley got the ball back and again fired it toward a male fan, who deflected and caught the ball. Beverley was then restrained by a teammate. He was not ejected from the game. Beverley later quote-tweeted a video of the incident.

Not Fair at all. Exchanged between a fan and our ball club all night. We warned and asked for help all night. Not fair. 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️ https://t.co/e2o0lcqZtg

Friday afternoon, the Professional Basketball Writers Association released a statement regarding Beverley’s postgame conduct.

“Disrespecting and singling out a professional journalist who is merely trying to do her job is unacceptable … while heated moments happen and are expected in our business, this type of behavior is atypical and should not be a part of any workplace.”

If the NBA disciplines Beverley, he would probably serve his suspension at the beginning of next season. When Beverley was a member of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2021, he received a one-game suspension, which carried over to the 2021-22 regular season, for shoving Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul from behind in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. That suspension was “based in part on Beverley’s history of unsportsmanlike acts,” according to an NBA statement.

Beverley was again suspended for three games in 2022 for shoving then-Suns center Deandre Ayton during a regular season game while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
