Recipes with whipped cream, including cream puffs, banana cream pie and custard

Whipped cream is a quintessential ice cream topping. That’s just one way, though, to enjoy this ethereal, cloudlike dessert staple.

The best thing to do with heavy cream? Whip it, whip it good.

It consists of heavy cream that has been beaten until it’s fluffy and full of air. It can be flavored with extracts, chocolate or fruit. It can be mixed with cream cheese, ricotta and citrus curds. It can go on top of pies, in between cookies or pastry and layered into parfaits and trifles. If you’re interested in moving beyond whipped cream as a sundae topping — and the canned stuff that’s often used — here are some ideas from our archives to inspire you.
